Ryan Dungey hopes to repeat his performace from High
Point at Budds Creek.
This Saturday June 18th the world's best motocross racers will gather in Mechanicsvile, MD for the Budds Creek National, the 4th stop of the 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship tour.
Founded in 1972 the AMA Pro Motocross Championship is the longest running motocross event series in the world and has produced legends like Mike Stanton, Jeff Ward, Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath and James Stewart.
Featuring two classes of racing -- 250cc and 450 cc -- the outdoor motocross series along with its sister indoor supercross series sits behind only Nascar in popularity among motor sports enthusiasts.
Heading into Budd's Creek one rider to watch is current 450cc points leader Ryan Dungey. Coming off his 2010 AMA Supercross indoor series championship earlier this year, Dungey has continued his momentum among the outdoor field in his first season in the 450cc class, which involves bigger bikes, more horsepower and greater speeds.
"This is my first year in the 450 outdoor class and it's a challenge," says Dungey. "There's a lot of competition and a deep field of talent with guys like Chad Reed."
Reed, last year's defending outdoor champ, started the season strong with a win at the Hangtown Classic on May 22. However he since been unable to repeat his initial performance and Dungey has capitalized, stirring speculation that the 450 rookie may be in the man to beat for an overall championship title.
Dungey prefers to avoid any forecasts and stay focused on the task at hand. "There's a lot of races left so I'm just taking one race at a time and trying to enjoy it."
