Just in time for winter...another look at Dark Fall... Filmmaker Alex DePhillipo has put together a moving and insightful documentary about the surf culture in New Jersey highlighted by Jersey surf pioneer and former Top 44 pro, Dean Randazzo, Dark Fall captures the essence of surfing the Northeast, dealing with brutal winter cold, endless summer flat spells and a general consensus that no surf exists.
Particularly illuminating is the story of Randazzo, who grew up in New Jersey and rode the initial wave of east coast success in the pro ranks along with Floridian Kelly Slater in the early 90s. While Randazzo qualified for the Top 44 in 1996 he did so with no sponsors.
"I had to win money," recalls Randazzo, "there were places on the tour when I wasn't eating if I didn't win money in that contest, or I didn't have a plane ticket home."
Challenged by the monstrous waves in Hawaii and curious skeptics in California, Randazzo poves that the east coast can not only produce great surf, but great surfers. Riding high after "makign it" Randazzo was sadly struck down with Hodgkins Lymphoma, which he now continuously battles both literally and figuratlivey through his Dan Randazzo Cancer Foundation.
Dark Fall was awarded Best Feature and Viewers Choice Awards at the 2010 New York Film Festival and his a stunning work by DePhillipi. Using entertaining and evocative testimony from current locals and revered pros like Kelly Slater to Randazzo himself, Dark Fall rewards any east coast surfer with hard-earned credibility and will no doubt inspire a new generation of groms struggling to find the soul of surfing on The Shore.
