Patchwork of wonder from Snowwater, BCGatorade is the world's most consumed sports drink. For years the brand has successfully marketed itself as a solution for athletes needing to replenish fluid loss after a hard work out or a high stakes game. Typically those athletes were your favorite NFL, NBA or Major League baseball stars, some of whom have even ventured to the Gatorade Sports Science Institute to run on treadmills, take breathe tests and execute other forms of exertion to determine just how many electrolytes were lost in the midst of battle.
Well in 2010 Gatorade stepped up its attention to its newest action sports division by examining what their athletes experience in the field. Last February, Gatorade snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth acted as a guinea pig in the mountains of British Columbia by shredding deep pow all day, all while being hooked up to heart monitors, having her food and fluid intake monitored and peeing in a cup.
Reason being, according to Gatorade Sports Scientist Melissa Tippet: "A lot of people don't realize that even in cold weather sports you can still sweat, you can still dehydrate, so we're looking at different ways to provide products that could be both efficacious and effective for snowboarders."
There's no doubt that after spending a week at the Snowwater Heli Lodge, Gatorade got a lot of data as to how snowboarders react to a mountain environment, particularly after the sun sets.
